Sustainable swaps don't have to be complicated, here's how you can get involved this Earth Day.

Earth Day began in 1970, when campaigners in America had been fighting against growing oil spills, polluting factories and power plants dumping raw sewage into the ground. A decade previously had seen the publication of Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, a ground-breaking environmental book which raised public awareness for the link between environment, pollution and public health.

Today we live in a world which is far more environmentally conscious, but we still have a long way to go. Earth Day continues to enjoy global participation with 500 cities and towns pledging to take part in Earth Action Day Events this year, helping to driving local climate action.

As individuals it can sometimes feel like our actions don’t make a difference, but they do! If we all decide to make some smaller changes, like switching to sustainable stationery, together it can make a huge difference to the future of our planet. So today, we’re sharing 5 easy ways to incorporate sustainability into everyday life.

Start with yourself

There are probably lots of small changes you can make around the home without even realising. Next time you’re having a deep clean, have a look around and take note of what you are consuming and wasting or even what you are cleaning with, and make a list of changes you could make.

It might be as simple as taking some time each week to plan out your meals to eliminate food waste. In 2024, we threw away roughly 9.5 million tonnes of food. This amount of food waste could feed approximately 30 million people annually. Taking the time to plan your meals (including snacks!) could not only help your wallet but reduce the waste you’re throwing away each week.

Break habits - slowly

It can take as little as 18 days to make or break a habit. Making small swaps is easy - but sticking to them is a lot harder. The key is choosing something small that you are likely to be able to stick to - and then working up to making bigger changes. It might be that you love treating yourself to a takeaway coffee - but this doesn’t have to stop!

Instead, change your single use coffee cup to a reusable one which will make a huge difference. This is because most disposable coffee cups end up in landfill as they are not easily recyclable due to the plastic lining that coats the paper.

Less than 1% are currently recycled in the UK. It might be a bit annoying at first, but remembering to take a reusable coffee cup with you each time you go will ensure you do your bit to reduce landfill waste and could save you a bit too, as most mainstream coffee shops in the UK offer a discount if you bring your own cup.

Spread the word

Once you have got the hang of something, or have made a habit of taking your reusable cup with you on the coffee run, there’s no better way to maximise the impact of this sustainable habit than to share with friends and family. Although careful, as there is a fine line between sharing and coming across as preachy!

When you feel confident be sure to pass on everything you’ve learned to family, friends and work colleagues in a friendly way. You never know who you are going to inspire. Or even, be the first in a friendship group to start the conversation about sustainable habits, as you never know what you're going to learn.

Invest in Eco Friendly Office Supplies

Whether you work at home, or in the office, it’s never been easier to make sustainable swaps when it comes to office supplies. We have a huge range of eco-friendly office supplies from printer paper made from recycled materials, to colourful desk accessories which are certified by blue angel, the reliable label for environmentally friendly products and services in many business sectors.

Even making one switch to a more sustainable printing paper, like HP Climate Choice Paper or Navigator Eco-Logical, can make the world of difference if your office gets through a lot of paper. It might seem like a small change, but if we all make swaps like these, it adds up to make a big difference.

Reduce energy consumption

Whether you’re at home or in the office, there are always occasions when something can be switched off. Or, you could even make the switch to LED lighting, which is more energy efficient and better for the planet overall.

Be sure to switch off monitors and appliances when you’re not in the office, and take some time out in the day at home to make sure nothing is being overcharged, and assess what can be turned off if it's not being used.

All these little changes will add up to make a big difference. Make sure to pass them along to friends and colleagues so we can all work together this Earth Day to be more eco conscious.
