Nescafe cup with tree in liquid The Story behind Nescafe and Sustainability

Discover how Nescafé are redefining the future of sustainable coffee, one drink at a time.

Do you think your daily cup of coffee can’t make a difference in the world? Think again. Coffee matters. And especially where it comes from and how it is grown.

Ever since their inception, Nescafé have been on a mission to put sustainability at the forefront of everything they do. By working with farmers on the ground and ensuring practices that renew, nourish, and protect the environment, Nescafé aims to preserve the planet's future so that coffee can continue to grow and be enjoyed globally as it is today.

Today we’re going to be highlighting how choosing Nescafé as your morning coffee helps you work towards a better tomorrow - even if you don’t know it yet.

The importance of regenerative farming

Often, we go about our caffeine-fueled daily lives without giving much thought to the coffee we drink. Before it even made it to your jar, it began its life as a raw, green bean, plucked from a tree halfway across the world. Every coffee bean has its own story to tell, as does every cup of coffee.

Nescafé understands the importance of soil health in the growing process. For coffee to grow well and sustainably, regenerative practices have to be in place. Not only does this make the soil healthier, but it is also more sustainable. Healthy soil can capture carbon, requires less fertiliser and is resistant to the impact of climate change.

Because of this, Nescafé are in constant communication and give support to thousands of farmers around the world to promote regenerative agricultural practices. Through regenerative agriculture, Nescafé hopes to increase biodiversity, improve soil health and promote deforestation-free farms across the world.

So when you enjoy your next cup of Nescafé coffee, rest assured that choosing a brand that cares about the planet helps you make a difference too.

Sustainable practices and livelihoods

As well as having a direct impact on the physical environment, Nescafé pays close attention to the farmers and the communities that grow their coffee beans. The reality is, every sip of coffee is down to the combined efforts of thousands of coffee farms across the world.

In 2014, Nescafé partnered with the Rainforest Alliance to implement the Plan Theory of Change, which outlined the positive impacts they planned to make. Through this, Nescafé can assess net farm income, measure farmer livelihoods and families alongside soil health, biodiversity and water to track carbon reduction.

Honduras in Central America has one of the world’s youngest populations. Around 65% are under 29. Because of their commitment, Nescafé launched a Youth Initiative there to inspire younger generations to get involved in the coffee growing community.

Through this, Nescafé has made an ambitious commitment to help 10 million young adults worldwide access economic opportunities by 2030. Within this is also the aim to provide coffee farming training for up to 25,000 young people in Honduras.

Whether it’s ensuring the current needs of coffee farmers around the world are met, or looking after the next generation and creating more opportunities, Nescafé has a firm commitment to preserving the livelihoods and improving opportunities within the coffee growing industry.

Evolving recycling initiatives

As well as the need to look after the physical environment and the farmers that grow the coffee, Nescafé also recognises the importance of minimising waste and recycling products where possible.

By 2025, Nescafé aims to ensure that they are as close to 100% recyclable packaging as possible. This is a work in progress, but the good news is that depending on what Nescafé product you enjoyed, there are usually different ways to recycle.

Nescafé jars (including the lid) are fully recyclable. Recycling your glass Nescafé jar can save up to 670kg of CO2e for every ton of recycled glass used. Better yet, you can reuse or repurpose your old jar to store other kitchen essentials.

Alongside the jars, Nescafé tins like the ones used for Azera are made from aluminium to ensure they can be recycled endlessly. Nescafé cartons for individual coffee sachets are completely recyclable; however, they are still currently working on creating recyclable sachets.

With ambitious targets for the near future and their current range of recyclable products, Nescafé sets the bar high with recycling. As consumers, we can rest easy knowing that choosing to drink Nescafé puts the environment first.
