Twinings Tea

Discover 300 Years of History with Twinings Tea, Global Leaders Since 1706. Discover Bold Flavours, Unique Blends and Always a High Quality Brew.

Twinings have been pioneers of the tea trade since 1706. The first tea room was opened on the Strand in London by Thomas Twining - a location that is still in operation today. By 1837, Twinings had received Royal recognition from Queen Victoria, becoming official suppliers to the British Royal household. Their logo, created in 1787, is the oldest in continuous use worldwide. The same lion crest still hangs above the original shop entrance.

Today, Twinings exports to over 115 countries and offers more than 600 tea varieties. From detox superblends to classic Twinings English Breakfast Tea, they are credited as a cornerstone of British culture. Twinings is also a founding member of the Ethical Tea Partnership and runs its own “Sourced with Care” program to improve tea growing conditions for communities across the world. Together with NGOs, supply chain partners and industry associations, Twinings supports the empowerment of women and young people by giving better access to water, sanitation and improving workers’ rights. For Twinings, tea is much more than a drink, but an essential component of daily life that has evolved through multiple generations of tea lovers across the globe.

More About Twinings

More Information About Twinings Tea

Although playing a huge role in the industry, the history of tea and its origins go back at least 2,000 years to China. Tea didn’t arrive in Europe until 1606, and until 1706, coffee was still the more popular beverage. Tom Twining witnessed the boom of coffee houses in cities as meeting places for important men, so he decided to open a tea house in the Strand, London. By 1717, Thomas had acquired two adjacent houses and turned one of them into a space making handcrafted blends of tea. He adorned the shop with a gold painted lion, and The Golden Lyon Tea and Coffee House was born.

Subsequent Twining generations continued to take over the booming business as the taste for tea continued to grow. In 1933, Twinings first blended the famous English Breakfast tea, which was marketed as a stronger tea to complement the bold flavours of a traditional breakfast. It wasn’t until 1956 that Twinings made tea bags for the first time, but this meant they expanded significantly into North American markets. Twinings became a member of the Ethical Tea Partnership in 1997, marking their commitment to creating a fairer, more sustainable tea industry for workers.
