Tombow was founded in 1913 by Harunosuke Ogawa in Japan as a manufacturer of wood cased pencils. Initially, they were making pencils for school and office use and quickly established a firm reputation for excellence in Japanese stationery. After World War 2, Tombow expanded its product line to include mechanical pencils, ballpoint pens and erasers.

In 1964, they launched their first ballpoint pen, but it wasn’t until the 1980s that the iconic dual brush pens were introduced. These became an instant hit and favourite around the world due to their flexible tip and water based ink. Even today, the dual brush pen remains one of Tombow’s bestselling products. Due to the combined success of the dual brush pen and surge in demand for office stationery products, Tombow were able to expand into Europe and North America by the 1990s-2000s. Today, Tombow Pens continues to innovate new product lines with a range of eco-conscious stationery using recycled materials, Fudenosuke brush pens and other creative tools.
