Scotch™ began with Richard Drew, a 3M lab technician who invented the first masking tape to help auto body painters achieve clean lines when painting two tone cars. This was soon followed by the invention of transparent cellophane tape, which became the iconic Scotch™ tape.

During WW2, Scotch™ became popular for sealing packages and repairing items and became a staple in homes and offices. Into the 1970s and after, they expanded their offering to include double sided tape, removable adhesives, and specialty tapes for photography, crafting, and packaging.
