More About Pilot

A History of PILOT Pens

PILOT was started by two naval engineers, Ryosuke Namiki and Masao Wada inspired by their experience of using fountain pens on a merchant ship. At the time, these were the only kinds of pens on the market, but they weren't great to use at sea as the nibs would rust due to salt water. To solve this, the pair came up with a fountain pen made with a stainless steel nib. In 1918, the first PILOT pens were launched in Japan and the name comes from their shared passion of the sea. Today, PILOT continues to dominate the pen market and is a leader in innovative rollerballs, erasable pens and ballpoints.
