The history of Paper Mate can be traced back to the 1940s when Patrik J Frawley wanted to improve the ballpoint pen. He revolutionised the way of producing pens at the time, with the idea of an instant drying ballpoint pen with no leak. Although we take these features for granted today, this was fairly new technology back then. It was in 1949 when Paper Mate was born, and by 1953 they had become a household stationery brand.

In the same year, Paper Mate spent the largest amount of money on a pen advert in history - totalling $2 million! The brand would go from strength to strength during the 20th century and bought out their flair felt tip pen in 1966, and the SharpWriter Mechanical Pencil in 1984. Along the way, they would tweak and innovate their pens to meet the needs of a constantly expanding market.

By 2000, Paper Mate had been acquired by Newell Brands and brought out a new range of clear, mechanical pencils and the iconic InkJoy range came along by 2011. By now, they were appealing to a new generation of stationery lovers with decades worth of experience behind them. In 2017, they brought our erasable coloured pens to add to their collection and never stop innovating. Recently, the Kilometrico Ballpoint has been celebrated in the stationery world for its eco-friendly components as it’s made from 80% recycled materials.
