Master Lock

Smart security starts with Master Lock. Founded in 1921 by Wisconsin locksmith and inventor, Henry Soref, Master Lock was built on his belief that padlocks could be made stronger by using laminated steel. By 1924, the company had introduced the world’s first laminated steel padlock, a design that would become its signature innovation. Master Lock gained national attention in 1933 when it participated in a major exhibit at the Chicago World Fair, demonstrating how laminated locks were constructed.

By the 1940s, Master Lock had established itself as a trusted name in security and dedicated a portion of its production to supporting the US military during World War II. In the 1950s, the company became the largest padlock producer in the United States and continued to see strong growth throughout the rest of the twentieth century. By 1970, Master Lock was acquired by American Brands (later known as Fortune Brands), a group it remains part of today.
