Kenco

With a place in the British coffee market since 1923, Kenco Coffee has become a firm favourite brand on the supermarket shelves and offices across the country for decades. Founded by Kenyan farmers, Kenco has always championed great tasting coffee.

The Kenya Coffee Company, as it was originally known, began distributing coffee in Britain in 1923. Founded by Kenyan farmers who were selling roasted and ground coffee on the streets, it soon found its way to Mayfair in London via mail order to British country houses. In the 1920s, Kenco would expand its premises in Bermondsey and Earlsfield, as coffee became a staple in high end chic London restaurants. Soon enough, Kenco had expanded into retail, opening what they claim is the first branded coffee shop chain in the UK.

Unlike today, coffee wasn’t big business back then, but Kenco were leading the way. The business continued to grow in the 1930s as Kenco took over premises in Earlsfield and Bermondsey, with their own chain of branded coffee shops. By 1962, they were sourcing coffee beans from markets all over the world and changed their name to the Kenco Coffee Company. In the 1980s, Kenco launched its first freeze dried, instant coffee using the same beans as their roast and ground coffee. In the 2000s, Kenco focused on sustainability as it partnered with the Rainforest Alliance. By 2010, all of Kenco’s coffee was certified. Kenco continues to innovate with products like the first instant flat white coffee in 2017, to the first ambient iced coffee and more.

More About Kenco

More Information About Kenco

Kenco has a rich history dating back to 1923, when it was first sold in Britain. Back then, coffee wasn’t as popular as it is today, and it would take several decades for it to become a mainstream delicacy. However, Kenco paved the way after opening its own coffee shop in Sloane Square. Before coming to the UK, Kenco was founded by a group of retired Kenyan coffee growers who first traded as “The Kenya Coffee Company Limited.” Trading in Vere Street, Mayfair in the 1920s, the shop sold roast and ground coffee, but most of its sales were by mail order to big country houses.

After World War 2, Kenco opened eleven coffee shops in locations such as Wimbledon and Golders Green in London. These are largely accredited as some of the first branded high street coffee shops in the UK. By the 1960s, café culture was starting to thrive in the UK, and by 1962, the Kenyan Coffee Company was re-branded as Kenco to reflect that the amount of coffee the company bought from Kenya was actually in decline. In the 1980s, Kenco introduced freeze dried instant coffee to keep up with household demand. By 2011, the brand introduced the first whole bean instant coffee under Millicano, which is a blend of 15% roast & ground coffee and instant coffee. Within a month, it had nearly sold a million packs and became their most successful coffee launch ever.

Today, Kenco remains a household staple and has introduced all kinds of new coffee products to keep up with demand, such as iced coffee and instant flat whites.
