More About 3M Command Hooks

The idea for command hooks dates back to the late 1980s when a 3M scientist, Karl Kreckel, from Germany, developed a unique type of adhesive that was strong, but could easily be removed from all surfaces. At the time, the team didn’t know quite what to do with this new technology and how to use it. But in 1992, Jim Bries was appointed to lead a product development team at 3M to explore applications for this new technology.

Between 1995-1996, the first Command™ adhesive strips were introduced that offered a revolutionary solution for hanging items without the need for nails or surface mange. Marketed as a product that could be stuck to a variety of different surfaces with no sticky residue or damage, it immediately appealed to home owners, renters, and businesses.

Owned by 3M, today Command™ is part of their broader portfolio of consumer and industrial products, known for their science led backing and ease of use for the end consumer. Command™ is recognised around the world today for its ease of use, clean removal and versatility in the home, office and use with seasonal décor.
