More About Cadbury

A Short History of Cadbury

Cadbury’s journey begins back in 1824, when John Cadbury opened a grocer's in Bull Street, Birmingham. Here, alongside vegetables, he sold cocoa and drinking chocolate which he made using a mortar and pestle. This soon became very popular and in 1831 he bought a warehouse and started manufacturing with the help of his sons. In 1847 they moved to an even larger warehouse in Bridge Street.

At the time, cocoa was still being made with cocoa butter. This meant that chocolate on the shelves was diluted with starches, adding a bit of an unpleasant taste. George Cadbury pioneered the production of cocoa with a press used by a Dutch manufacturer called van Houten. This squeezed cocoa butter from the beans so no starches had to be added. Using this, George soon realised he could make cocoa 100% pure.

The first Cadbury’s factory opened in 1878 and the brothers named it Bournville. In 1935, the Cadbury family founded the Cadbury Foundation as a tribute to the brothers. Today, it continues to support local communities, volunteers and colleagues. The post war years were when some of the iconic treats we know today such as Double Decker, Star Bar and Wispa were born. The birth of TV advertising and the surge in the demand for food meant the industry boomed.

Fast forward to 2010, and Cadbury became part of the Kraft Foods family. Over the 200 years, they have continued to innovate the confectionary industry, evolve new products and master old classics.
