A more sustainable future through food. Biona’s story begins in the 1970s, when co-founder Noel McDonald lived in a self sufficient commune on the west coast of Ireland. It was through this experience that he realised the importance of organic farming and maintaining respect for the land. After Noel moved to London, he opened one of the UK’s first organic wholefood shops, Windmill Wholefoods in 1978. In London he also met Donata Berger who was also passionate about natural good. Together, they opened one of the UK’s first exclusively vegetarian restaurants in 1981.
Whilst working at their restaurant, they became increasingly frustrated with how difficult it was to source high quality, organic food. This then sparked a mission to create a better organic food option for everyone. In 1992, they founded Biona, a brand built on three essential core principles: 100% organic ingredients, natural vegetarian food and delicious flavour without compromise. Over the past thirty years, Biona has grown from a small organic food wholesaler to a major brand with over 500 products available from brads to pantry staples.
Biona’s first product was a homemade granola, created around their kitchen table with handpainted labels. This humble beginning would set the tone for a brand passionate about care, craftsmanship and authenticity.
The brand’s mission centres on creating a healthier future for people and the planet by providing high quality, delicious, 100% organic food. Their purpose is rooted in two commitments: healthy organic food and healthy organic soil.
