Acer was founded in 1976 by Stan Shih in Hsinchu City, Taiwan. Originally, the company was named MultiTech International and started with just 11 employees. Early products included microprocessor training kits. It wasn’t until 1987 that MultiTech was rebranded as Acer Inc., the first Taiwanese computer company to sell products directly.

In 1986, Acer launched the world’s first Chinese language computer powered by an Intel 386 processor. By the 1990s, Acer had expanded into countries like Thailand, Mexico, and Taiwan, building up its global reputation. They went on to acquire major acquisitions like Texas Instruments' notebook division, Gateway, and Packard Bell. By 2007, Acer was positioned as one of the largest PC vendors worldwide.

By the early 2000s, Acer had begun to incorporate social responsibility initiatives and begin looking at more sustainable ways to manufacture their products. Today, they have a whole range called Vero made from recycled materials. As of 2024, Acer ranks among the top six PC vendors globally and continues to enjoy success across the world.
